ThaFormula.Com -
How did you get started in production?
RDiggy - I started in '95. We (The Last Kind) didn't really have beats
so we decided to do it ourselves. I went out and got some equipment
and started makin' beats.
ThaFormula.Com - So you started out rhymin' before you got
into producing?
RDiggy - Yeah.
ThaFormula.Com - What made you decide that you wanted to be
the producer as opposed to rhyming?
RDiggy - We just didn't really have any beats, the people who were
submitting beats, we just weren't feeling their music.
ThaFormula.Com - What equipment did you learn on? What was the
first stuff you picked up?
RDiggy - I think it was a Roland DR50 or 60, then I took that back and
got an SP1200.
ThaFormula.Com - Is that what you still use now?
RDiggy - Sometimes I still use the SP, but now I'm usin' the MPC2000.
ThaFormula.Com - Which one do you prefer?
RDiggy - Each one has a different quality. The SP I'll primarily use
for drums and the MPC has got more sample time and the sound is more
clear. It really depends on what I'm trying to do. But right now I'm
using the MPC, but on the first album (Revelations) all I used was the
SP.
ThaFormula.Com - How did you learn on the SP, did you teach
yourself or have someone give you a hand?
RDiggy - I mostly taught myself, just read the book you know. I had a
couple people show me some stuff, some of the basics, but I learned
most of it on my own.
ThaFormula.Com - How long do usually put in on each track or
does it just vary?
RDiggy - Yeah, it varies, it depends. Some will take me like a day and
some will only take a couple hours. Some of em' I just leave and come
back to them later.
ThaFormula.Com - Do you play any instruments?
RDiggy - I play some Keys, and just the SP and MPC.
ThaFormula.Com - What do you lay first? Is it always the
drums?
RDiggy - I might hear a little sample or somethin' and chop that up
first, or I might just do the drum and then dig for something to go
with them soemthin' that will work with it, it depends.
ThaFormula.Com - You collect vinyl or you just go out lookin'
for specific stuff?
RDiggy - My mom worked in a record store when she was younger so I got
most of her records, and I've been collectin' for years myself.
ThaFormula.Com - What have you been workin' on lately and what
are you looking to work on?
RDiggy - I'll work with anybody, but right now I'm mostly doin' our
stuff, but we've got other people in the group that do beats now too.
ThaFormula.Com - If you could do some tracks for anyone right
now, who would you like to work with?
RDiggy - I like people like Mos Def, KRS, Nas, anyone that's dope and
doin' good shit.
ThaFormula.Com - What do you like more, rhymin' or producing?
RDiggy - I like both, but right now I like producing.
ThaFormula.com - You started making beats in like '95, but how
long were you rhyming before that?
RDiggy - Man, since I was like a little kid, probably like 8 or 9.
Back when EPMD and Eric B & Rakim were droppin'.
ThaFormula.Com - Did you DJ at all before you got into
producing?
RDiggy - Nah, I wish I did.
ThaFormula.Com - Why do you say that?
RDiggy - I just like to have my hand in everything ya know.
ThaFormula.Com - So who did the cuts on the Last Kind album?
RDiggy - That was DJ Trademark, he's the DJ for our crew. He also did
the cuts for the new Last Kind album.
ThaFormula.Com - Are you shopping that album around now? Is it
done?
RDiggy - Yeah, it's done and we're just looking for someone to pick it
up.
ThaFormula.Com - Did you handle all the production on the new
album, or did some of your crew do some tracks?
RDiggy - D Strong our other producer in the group, he's just learnin'
now, so I did it. Everyone else in the group can produce too, but I'm
the only one with the equipment.
ThaFormula.Com - Do you have a studio at the house, is that
where you handle most of the production?
RDiggy - Yeah, pretty much. I just can't record there. We go to Def
Con studios in West LA to record.
ThaFormula.Com - What producers are you feelin' right now?
RDiggy - Hi-Tek, Premier, Pete Rock, Jay Dee who used to be in Slum
Village and some up and coming producers.
ThaFormula.Com - Anything you'd like to say to anyone checking
this out?
RDiggy - Anybody that needs beats, just get with me!
