- You know I always see MC's like Twista and Bone getting props for
tha rapid fire type flow, but I never hear your name mentioned at all
when talking about this. I always felt that you really were tha
first to bring this style to tha masses and that nobody ever did it
better. Do you feel you never got your props for this?
Wise
Intelligent - Not really. I deal with tha creativity of
it. When you creating something and put it out there then you
create something else then keep movin and that's tha power of creation
right there.
We not conforming and everybody that follows somebody else's creation
is actually conforming and putting death nails in their own
creativity. We just refuse to conform but as far as the credit
goes they can have the credit and fame from tha styles that we created
but we know who tha authors are. I sit back and I watch alot of
kids on 106 and Park and MTV and when they see me they say it.
But when they on TV it's a different thing. It's about marketing
and promoting your product and I understand that. It's the
business of hip hop and that's what you supposed to do.
ThaFormula.com
- Well I just brought it up because I always felt that people should
recognize what you brought to tha game and to also let you know that
we recognize what styles you originated?
Wise
Intelligent - I agree and as long as we got writers like you who is
gonna report what really happened and not what they think happened, it
will be alright. Alot of writers are young and don't have no hip
hop history. They are just popping up in tha game.
They went to school and studied a little journalism and basically only
know what's current.
ThaFormula.com
- Seeing that your style was so different and original back then, what
exactly got PRT it's deal with Profile Records?
Wise
Intelligent - Something that is happening in abundance today.
Going independent. We decided to put a 12" out on Northside
records with a bunch of heads from around tha way that started a
little label. So we decided to pt a joint out with them so we
would have control of everything that we did cause we wasn't always
rappers you know. So what happened was tha vinyl dropped in tha
hands of Red Alert. Red Alert got it and spun tha record.
He started his show with it and closed his show with it and from there
heads were checkin' for it.
ThaFormula.com
- How do you feel Profile dealt with you first LP "Holy Intellect"
and were you happy with how it was promoted?
Wise
Intelligent - Not at all. That record was definitely not
promoted tha way that it should have been. Tha record was
promoted just enough for other labels artists to steal what we were
doing and claim it for themselves. Like I said when I see other
artists they recognize on an extreme level almost. You know tha
record was not promoted because they didn't understand what they were
sitting on. What Profile did is they signed PRT to follow
tha trend of tha pro black socially conscious rappers or whatever you
wanna call it. So we kind of got caught up in that thing you
know and when it started to turn over to tha NWA's the DJ Quik's and
people like that, Profile started to go into that direction and they
slept on something that was really big.
ThaFormula.com
- After "Holy Intellect" you dropped "Pure
Poverty" one year later.
Wise
Intelligent - We had so much material man. Right now I'm sitting
on material that we had from those eras that didn't make any of tha
albums but we just made music. We were young heads from tha
streets just making hip hop music. That's what we did, that was
our job 24/7. We were always trying to come up with tha most
authentic way of expressing ourselves in hip hop so that's what we
were. So like 'Pure Poverty' and 'Black Business', alot of those
records was records that we had. So we would just pick records
out of a bundle. That's tha way it went down most of tha time.
ThaFormula.com
- How did tha label react to "Pure Poverty"?
Wise
Intelligent - They really did not understand "Pure
Poverty." If you thought they didn't understand tha first
album, "Pure Poverty" was an enigma to them especially tha
title track. They had no clue as to what to do with tha record
and they wouldn't take our advice because they were always looking at
ways to maximize their dollar even though we knew best. So it
was a hard road.
ThaFormula.com
- So 2 years later you drop "Black Business." What
made you choose that title?
Wise
Intelligent - At tha time alot of black businesses were popping
up. This is when alot of rappers and people from tha inner city
were realizing tha power of hip hop and it's ability to empower
communities. It's ability to give birth to entrepreneurs.
We were seeing so many logos. Fubu, Cross Colors, Spike Lee's 40
Acres. It was just so many Black Businesses popping up out of
hip hop culture that we felt we recognized that.
ThaFormula.com
- And how did tha label feel now?
Wise
Intelligent - Man, this was tha worst. Business was tha worst
time ever at Profile Records. Alot of things started to get
crazy over there. It was like dealing with Satan's older
brothers.
ThaFormula.com
- Afterwards in '95 you dropped your solo "Killing You For
Fun." What made you go solo and how did you feel about that
situation?
Wise
Intelligent - I felt good about it because it was more me trying to
get a greater grasp of what was going on tha business end of hip hop
or how it functions doing it independently. Basically I wanted
to learn tha process of putting a record out and that's pretty much
why I put that record out.
ThaFormula.com
- So now came '96 and you dropped what many consider to be your best
and most slept on LP "The New World Order." What are
your thoughts on that record?
Wise
Intelligent - Now that record right there, Profile definitely dropped
tha ball on. They slept on that one man. They deeper then
slept. They went beyond sleep on that one. That record
right there is really very dear to me. It had all tha elements
of a classic album. But again it goes back to tha business that
is taking place behind tha talent. At tha time Profile was
trying to sell tha label. They were trying to hurry and put out
records of all tha groups that was on tha label to enhance their
catalog to make tha sale value go up. But every group on
Profile records ended up suffering tha same consequence so it wasn't
like we were singled out. It's just that promoting tha records
wasn't a part of tha plan for Profile Records at tha time.
ThaFormula.com
- So that was it with Profile for you guys right?
Wise
Intelligent - Yeah, they sold tha label to Arista and we requested a
release from Arista due to tha fact that Arista didn't have a
clue. They had everybody sitting around from tha label but
didn't know what they wanted to do with anything. So we wanted
to be free from tha label so we achieved a release from Arista.
ThaFormula.com
- So after you guys were released from Arista, what were you guys
feeling?
Wise
Intelligent - It was good for me. That's what I wanted. I
wanted to sit back and learn some more about tha business before I
take another crack at it.
So that brings us to today. Intelligent Muzik is tha
label. www.intelligentmuzik.com
and it's all real.
We got tha next album that's gonna come out off tha label is a Wise
Intelligent solo joint and this record is a style record. It's
like every rhyme style ever done in hip hop is on this record.
It's like every MC is in me on this record and it's a real crazy
record that no other rapper has been able to attempt or achieve or
even fathom in his mind to try and do. It's every rhyme style, I
kid you not. It's everything that Wise Intelligent and PRT has
ever done on one compact disc that will be out in September. But
before that is released, we put together some exclusive jointz that
PRT had composed between 1996 and 2000 that we never put on any
records. Alot of stuff is older music and some of it is newer
music. It's called "The declaration of Independence."
Just look for tha CD with tha food stamp on it. It's a dollar
food stamp joint and this record right here is dear to my heart.
If you listen to tha content of each song, you will understand why
it's very close to me. We gonna bring it out there when we come Tonight
Thursday August 5th 2004 at tha Gabah in Hollywood Ca. So that
CD will be available for purchase. A new PRT album will also
be happening soon. You know right now everybody is airing out
their heads and clearing their minds right now. But it will
happen and it will be on tha Intelligentmuzik label so it's all good
right now. I wouldn't wanna be no other rapper but me right now.
